(I've got the early game exploration down pretty well using the hero as an explorer, shifting to armor for battles, colonizing strong systems, etc.) Seems like the strategy shifts to prioritize CP and bigger vessels. I tried ramping up to the next level of difficulty but didn't enjoy the weaker start positions and the inequality of the battles.
I was wondering if the faster game speeds fix this? What speed setting do you play on? Is the end game better at the faster speeds? I know people turn off economic victory but on the normal setting I'm usually ready for the game to end by any means. One thing I've noticed is that the end game starts to get pretty boring on the normal setting.

I haven't played with the "No Small Systems" mod yet, but I have downloaded it.
It's much like the Civ games in that if you get a crappy start position, it's a crappy game, but if you get a good start position, things rock. I've been playing the base game on normal settings, 7 civs, solo.
